A new World record, US$142.4million was  paid for Francis Bacon’s three-panelled painting “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” at Christies auction in NY.The New York Post has  exclusively reveal the buyer  is Qatar’s Sheikha Mayassa, the most powerful woman in art.While the Wall street journal write Elaine Pascal Wynn is the buyer.

Qatar is estimated to be the world’s largest buyer in the art market, in terms of value. In fact, The Art Newspaper noted that the daughter of the Emir and Sheikha Moza, Sheikha Al Mayassa, is not the only art collector in the family: hercousin Sheikh Saud Bin Muhammad Bin Ali Al-Thani has always been an avid art collector and was recently named among the top ten collectors by Artnews.
Amongst recent purchases (2011) made by Qatar might be the”Merkin Rothkos”: 11 paintings by Mark Rothko sold by court order for $310 million to an unidentified buyer in 2009. These works came from the collection of financier J. Ezra Merkin, who was sued by the state of New York for his role in a financial fraud which victimized hundreds of investors. The”Merkin Rothkos” constituted the largest private collection of Rothko’s work ever amassed. Many well-informed sources indicate that the paintings have gone to Qatar.

The same has been said for a group of artworks – amongst which are works byRyman, Reinhardt, Morandi, Serra and Fontana – from the collection of the late filmmaker Claude Berri, said to have been sold for around 50 million euro.

The 1969 lifesize triptych , never before offered at auction, had carried a pre-sale estimate of about $85m. In the end it easily eclipsed the $119.9m price of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, achieved in May 2012 year at Sotheby’s. The previous record for a Bacon work of art was $86.3m set in 2008.

The monumental painting depicts the Dublin-born painter’s friend and fellow artist Lucian Freud on a chair, with a view from each side and one face-on. Christie’s called it “a true masterpiece that marks Bacon and Freud’s relationship” and their “creative and emotional kinship”.

The work sold after “6 minutes of fierce bidding in the room and on the phone,” Christie’s said in a statement. The price includes the buyer’s premium. Christie’s did not say who bought the painting.

The painting  was bought by William Acquavella, who works for several  Billionaire collectors Stephen Wynn among others.
