Malaga’s Roman Theatre Surges in Popularity, Becoming Second-Most Visited Monument in Andalusia
The Roman theatre located in the heart of Malaga has claimed the title of the second most-visited site within the RECA network of cultural spaces in Andalusia, just behind the renowned Alhambra in Granada.
During the first quarter of this year, the archaeological marvel on Calle Alcazabilla welcomed a staggering 111,276 visitors, according to data provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Junta.
The Roman theatre has been experiencing a steady increase in interest, solidifying its position as the birthplace of imperial civilization in the city. Visitor numbers have been rising consistently, with March recording the highest footfall at 41,157 individuals.
Remarkably, the visitor count for the first three months of this year already constitutes 30% of the total number of visitors recorded in the entire previous year (361,332 people). If this upward trend continues, the thousand-year-old theatre in Malaga could surpass 400,000 visitors by the end of this year.
This news comes in the wake of an overall surge in visits to monumental spaces, as the first quarter of the year witnessed a remarkable milestone, with over a million visitors (1,083,373) exploring these cultural treasures. This represents a significant 29.8% increase compared to the same period last year.
According to the statistics, the Alhambra and the Generalife claimed the top spot as the most popular site in Andalusia, drawing in 524,008 visitors. Following the Roman theatre in Malaga, the third position went to the Cordoba Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter, which also surpassed the 100,000 visitor mark.
