Malaga Emerges as Fifth-Most Attractive Province for Foreigners in Spain in 2022

In the vibrant landscape of immigrant destinations in Spain, Malaga has secured its position as the fifth most sought-after province by newcomers, according to recent data released by Spain’s INE national institute of statistics. The coastal province witnessed a remarkable 24% surge in the number of foreigners arriving in 2022 compared to the previous year.

A total of 61,056 individuals chose Malaga as their new home in 2022, placing it behind Madrid (238,354 immigrants), Barcelona (202,812), Alicante (84,745), and Valencia (80,350). Notably, Malaga’s ranking aligns with its population standing as the sixth most populous province, boasting 1.75 million inhabitants, as per the latest census data.

Breaking down the demographics of those who made Malaga their home, South American countries contributed significantly, with 19,362 newcomers. Among them, Argentinians formed the largest group (6,824), closely followed by Colombians (4,798). European migrants accounted for nearly 14,000 new residents, with Ukrainians comprising the majority (6,784), followed by 3,300 from the UK.

Malaga province also emerged as an appealing destination for North Americans, welcoming 1,188 individuals. The breakdown includes 737 Americans, 283 Mexicans, and 168 Canadians.

Malaga’s allure for immigrants not only outstrips the growth in most Spanish provinces but also surpasses the majority of regions in the country.

The data positions Malaga just below Catalonia (274,438), Madrid (238,354), the Valencian Community (183,433), Andalucía (164,135), and the Canary Islands (61,745) in terms of immigrant attraction.

The significant increase in immigration to Malaga is evident, with the 61,056 newcomers in 2022 representing a noteworthy 24.75% surge from the 48,942 individuals who arrived the previous year.

Spain, on the whole, experienced a substantial influx of immigrants, with numbers rising from 887,960 in 2021 to 1.258 million in 2022—an impressive 41% increase. Notable growth was observed in the Andalucía region, with provinces like Jaén and Seville exceeding the national average with increases of 42%, welcoming almost 5,000 and more than 23,600 immigrants, respectively.
