The Hospital Costa del Sol expansion project has surpassed 75% completion! 🏨 The goal is to have the new facilities up and running by early 2024. This significant milestone was confirmed during a visit by Patricia Navarro, the regional government delegate in Andalusia, and Marbella’s mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, as they inspected the ongoing work at the hospital, which will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next December. 🎂
The expansion work covers three buildings: an administrative building already operational, a new adjacent hospital with work at 85% completion, and the renovation of the current building, currently in progress. This means that the overall project is now over 75% complete. The project has received over €85 million in funding from the European Union, in addition to the €12 million spent on rescuing the hospital concession in 2019. This new infrastructure, adding nearly 40,000 square meters to the existing hospital, will address the current structural limitations and provide access to new medical specialties such as radiology, neurology, nuclear medicine, mental health, and palliative care, among others. This expansion will also ease the pressure on the Virgen de la Victoria Hospital in Málaga and improve waiting lists. 👩⚕️👨⚕️
The project will increase the hospital’s size from 100,000 to 160,000 square meters, according to the European Commission. The expansion will result in a 90% increase in space for consultations, testing, and treatments, including 68 new hospital beds and four operating rooms. For the emergency department, there will be six new consultation rooms, two additional observation rooms, and 29 extra beds and recliners. The Hospital Costa del Sol, which opened in December 1993, began its expansion in 2021 and is expected to conclude at the end of this year after several delays due to project enhancements. While the initial project was budgeted at €51 million, the budget has increased to €86 million as approved by the European Commission, covering construction, equipment, and technical assistance. 🏥💼
In addition, the government delegate mentioned that the expansion of the Albarizas emergency department will begin shortly, and the expansion of Nueva Andalucía is currently in the bidding process.
